Great idea Wendy!
Thanks for the mention and posting a link to my sketch

It was very weird using my left hand. I got used to it after a couple of trashed sketches. Here's the strange part....I found I was much more relaxed when sketching with my left hand. Less pressure "to do it right" I think. Maybe it would make a fun challenge?
I'm able to use my right hand a little bit now, but surgery on Monday will have me using my left hand exclusively again for awhile. So BOLO for more left handed weirdness

Thanks again for the mention friend.

All I ever use is my left hand! Am I doing it wrong??

I dont have any cures for lack of motivation but there are a couple of things I do when I get stuck for what to draw.
- stare at clouds until images start to appear, also good to do with the kids as they often see things before we do. When I see something I do a quick line drawing and then keep looking for more. Later you have a few line drawings to look back at and usually something gets me excited.
- same thing with clouds but with cracks in the pavement or a stone wall (really any textured thing can work, even light patterns on the wall)
- scribble a few random lines, what does it look like? If you dont see anything try turning it
- just try making a random texture background (this is like Artigan's idea). Play with brushes and random stuff until you start to see something in it or it just becomes a really cool abstract.
- and my most recent one was to goodle pictures of seed pods. Put them all onto a piece of paper and print it out. When you look at funny natural things they always start to look like something and then your off!
Even if you don't use those exact images that you start to see, it's often enough to start the thinking process. They are not exactly ground breaking tips but just some things I do when I'm staring at a blank screen with no ideas

I love all of you! Ive been having issues for a few weeks now ( and stress doesn't help!) . I haven't sketched anything special lately, and defiantly nothing that I really like when I am finished.... I will try some of the things suggested here!

this is something that my family just doesn't understand...
-
Yes!!! But not so severe.....
I get it once I start to color my sketches....that's where the fu gets suuucked out! :/
-
I like the scribble and see what it looks like...there are a lot of my sketches that come out of a nebulous beginning...I just see what they look like and run with it....and like Artigan I only use my left hand too!!...😉
-
Uh. I start all my art work by picking a background color! I don't know how to plan a drawing sooo... Just DOddle IT! 😃😃😃

I find myself simply not wanting to draw much anymore. Before, I was literally sketching, and uploading something everyday, now I might draw something once a week. I've come to the conclusion that it's not a "block" of any kind, I'm just "burned out" I suppose. I was looking at everything thinking "I wonder if I could sketch that?" Now it's "meh, I don't feel like drawing".
Oh well. I've been this way before. It will go away.

Hang in there Virgil! Your art is fantastic...you'll get the spark back again!
-
I have this most of the time lol
-
So weird u should ask this but yeah,I just can't get going with anything at the moment, the last few sketches I've uploaded I really have,nt been happy with, like I could have done better with them!!... Sometimes I think I need time out,I no eventually the motivation will re-appear,😃
-
Coops help! It keeps your creative juices flowing!😊

Yep, been meh, lately. :(

So, ya know how I can't draw right now? Broken wrist etc? I've been reading books about drawing....the best book by far for moving forward and beyond meh is "Keys to Drawing with Imagination" by Bert Dodson. Lots of great exercises, techniques etc. I have found it to be helpful. FYI, buy the book not the Kindle version.
-
Gayla, I'm curious why you say book over kindle? Don't own a kindle but was thinking of getting one to help manage my art book collection..
I am so impressed with you for taking one more bunch of chaos in your life and making it an opportunity to have the time and inclination to read about art and creativity! You, my friend, inspire me.
-
Thanks friend for the compliment.
In my experience art books tend to be big...lots of drawings, sketches, techniques etc. I bought my first art book as a kindle using the iPad app. It looked great, just had to zoom in and scroll around alot to get the gist of the subject. For this subject IMO hard back books are just easier.
FYI, either the chaos is becoming more manageable or I'm getting used to it. You want to know the really ironic thing? Before retiring, the name of my business was "controlling your chaos"....weird huh?

Twilight zone music! Thanks for the info on the art books!

Well, you aren't alone! Most often, life gets in the way. You need to be motivated to sketch. Artigan has a good idea, create a new brush. But still, you don't want to sketch for sketching sake. I go dry all the time and I go where PK goes, into the abstract. Sometimes spend hours creating garbage. But I think of it as learning -- which is why I am part of this community anyway. I really want to learn! You don't have nearly as much to learn as I do because you are already a great artist. There is no reason why you can't take a break. Before you know it, you'll get a yearning to draw again. Just my 2 cents....
Thanks Gayla for the suggested reading.

I once went 2 years without drawing one thing, not even a doodle, just super busy with other parts of my life (2009 - 2010). Drawing is like Forrest Gump at the end of the movie where his little boy gets on the bus and Forrest says, 'I'll be right here when you get back'.
I highly recommend picking up a book on art about an artist that you like or one you don't even know. You don't need to read the book. Just look at the pictures.
